Patient Information
First Visit
Your initial visit will include a Consultation where we will explain your diagnosis and treatment options. We always recommend starting with a consultation, especially for more complex procedures or if you have a complicated medical history. However, surgery can be performed during the first visit under either local or general anesthesia, as long as the TruForm Registration is completed online beforehand.
Here are some scenarios where a separate consultation is highly recommended: Complex medical history, Wisdom Teeth Removal, Dental Implants, Complex Bone Grafting, or if you're taking Coumadin.
For simpler procedures, a separate consultation may not be necessary, such as for Basic Dental Extractions or Extractions with simple Bone Grafting performed at the same time.
Please review below to see what type of first visit applies to you:
For Consultation Only:
- Please complete the TruForm Registration form online before your appointment to save time when you arrive.
- Bring any referral slips and x-rays you may have (unless your referring doctor has sent them electronically).
- Bring a list of any medications you are currently taking.
- Make sure to bring both your Dental and Medical Insurance cards/information with you to ensure smooth processing of any claims.
- Patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
For Consultation and Surgery under Local Anesthesia (if you're not being sedated):
All of the above applies, plus:
- DO NOT stop taking Coumadin, Aspirin, or Plavix without prior consultation. If you are on these medications, please contact us in advance as they may require special arrangements.
- Take all prescribed medications as usual, including on the day of surgery (particularly blood pressure, diabetes, and other medications).
- Please eat all your meals as usual. A good breakfast or lunch before surgery is helpful for all patients to heal after surgery.
- Eat a regular meal before surgery to promote healing after the procedure. This is especially important for Diabetic patients who have taken their medications.
- Make sure to check with us about prescriptions that can be filled before your visit.
For Consultation and Surgery under General Anesthesia (Being Sedated):
This scenario is rare, as most procedures require a consultation first. If you believe you're a candidate for both consultation and surgery under general anesthesia on the same day, please contact us to discuss further.
- IMPORTANT: Do not eat or drink anything for eight (8) hours prior to your anesthesia appointment. Eating or drinking could be life-threatening.
Exception: Medications for conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes may be taken with a small sip of water, but this must be done no later than 2 hours before surgery. For example, if your surgery is at 10 AM, you can take medications with a small sip of water until 8 AM, but after 8 AM, you must refrain from eating or drinking. - Because anesthesia can cause prolonged drowsiness, you must be accompanied by a responsible adult who will drive you to and from the office. This person must stay with you until you've sufficiently recovered, which could take up to 24 hours.
- During the recovery period (up to 24 hours), you should avoid driving, operating complex machinery, or making important decisions such as signing documents.
